Now View All Vines Created Since 2013 With Vine Archive

Just recently Vine app was converted into a curtail camera app, Vine Camera as a cost-cutting measure by Twitter. Now, the users who wish to indulge in nostalgia can see all Vines available on the site since 2013 with the help of company's Vine Archive, which has now gone live instead of its official website.

Vine had previously said that the company will make the previously made Vines available on the website for the users to view. Users can search for the Vines either by the year of upload or by the category they were uploaded to. The categories mentioned on the site include Animals, Art, Comedy, Edits, Music & Dance, among some others.

Users can also choose to browse the Vines through categories Editor's Picks, and Playlists such as "Do It For The Vine", "On Fleek", and others. Users can also search for their favourite Vines/Viners by searching the name of their creator's user name in the community section.

If you're lazy enough to browse through the archive, Twitter itself recently started looping all videos that have duration shorter than 6.5 seconds.

To recall, there were reports that Twitter was considering a sale of the service instead of discontinuation but the company went ahead to announce earlier this month that it will be transforming the app into Vine Camera on January 17.

Twitter to Stop Counting Media, Mentions Towards 140-Character Limit From September 19: Report

Twitter earlier this year confirmed that its signature 140-character limit for tweets was here to stay. The company however confirmed plans to change the way it counted those 140 characters back in May, without announcing a date when it will be implemented. A new report indicates that Twitter will start executing the new changes for 140-characters limit from September 19.

With the new changes, the tweets will no longer count the usernames toward the 140-character count. Apart from usernames, tweets will also stop counting media attachments such as images, gifs, videos, polls, or even quote tweets as characters within your Tweet.

Announcing the new format back in May, Twitter had claimed that the new changes would make conversations on the platform "easier and more straightforward." The Verge report, which cites two people familiar with the company's business, however notes that "plans for the rollout could change." Unfortunately, Twitter is yet to reveal a date for the new changes to tweet characters limit.

Apart from the above changes, Twitter will also enable the retweet button on user's own tweets which will allow retweeting or quoting tweets. At this moment, it is not clear whether all the changes will be in effect from next week only or the changes will roll out gradually.

Previously, we've seen reports on how the company planned to pull the plug on the count completely, and many felt the micro-blogging site would lose its essence. "It's staying. It's a good constraint for us and it allows for of-the-moment brevity," Jack Dorsey had told a news site.

Soon after, the company removed the limit from Direct Messages, but ascertained that tweets will continue to be 140 characters only. Previously, Twitter has also said that links and photo attachments will not be using up characters in the 140 characters limit.

Back in May, Twitter apart from making a general announcement about the new changes had notified developers and said that the update would be available over the coming months.

How to turn off Twitter read receipts?

Twitter had announced, much to the anger of most of Twitterati , the READ RECEIPTS to its Direct Messages. While once you could bask in the safety of stimulating ignorance at your DM box, that privilege has now been eradicated in the latest update.

Don't panic, though, because there's a way to disable read receipts from ruining everything.

While enabled by default, this feature can be disabled by going into your account settings "at any time." Specifically,  To turn off read receipts, simply go to the "Security and privacy" tab in your settings on desktop, scroll all the way down, and uncheck the box. It should look something as follows:

It’s not only read receipts coming, though. The micro blogging service also plans typing indicators and web link previews, in an obvious effort to morph the DM into more of chat service.

Twitter Introduces Read Receipts, Web Link Previews in Direct Messages

After introducing the Night Mode feature on iOS and Android, Twitter is now taking efforts to put focus back on its Direct Messaging (DM) feature.

Twitter has been trying to position direct messages as a chat app and many changes have been introduced recently in a bid to encourage more conversations. The most notable among these changes was the removal of the 140-character limit in DMs last year enabling users to exchanges lengthy missives. And now, the introduction of read receipts, typing indicators, and web link previews to direct messages is another most definite sign of Twitter intentions for its direct messages feature.

(Also Read: Direct Message limit to exceed from 140 characters to 10,000)

Read receipts bring the ability to see if the user has read the private message or not, or whether it has been delivered or not. This works similar to what is seen on WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger. Users who consider this as a breach of privacy can disable it from the Settings menu. However, you will then not be able to see whether your message has been delivered or not either.

This new feature hasn't been rolled out on the Web, but it is available for Android and iOS users. Additionally, Twitter DM also gets Web link previews. This means that every time you send a link via DM, a small preview will also be sent alongside. Lastly, Twitter has also introduced the typing indicator feature which show three dots next to the username when they are typing a reply in real-time. While Direct Messaging isn't the first choice of communication for many users, these additions are still noteworthy for the platform. All of these features don't require an update, and are accessible to all users currently.

As mentioned, Twitter has slowly but steadily been updating the DM to make it more user friendly for its avid users. It gradually allowed people to add emojis and even gif images. In April, it even added a button that let people easily share 'tweets' in direct messages.

Most of these features can be found on most chat apps out there, and Twitter appears to be playing catch up for now. These latest updates to direct messages are welcome changes to the otherwise mundane feature, and Twitter's continued efforts could possibly bear fruit for them sometime in the future.

Microsoft Wants Developers to Report Edge Bugs on Twitter

Every software application out there isn't without its own set of bugs and issues. And it is important to report these bugs so that developers can improve their apps. Microsoft understands that there needs to be a faster, easier way to do this and what's easier than sending out a simple tweet? The company is now allowing Web developers to report bugs and issues related to its Edge browser via Twitter using the hashtag #EdgeBug.

Microsoft launched its Edge browser last year, and like any other application, it still has quite a few bugs. Microsoft already made it pretty easy for Edge users to post their feedback and bug reports through its UserVoice and Issue Tracker, but has now simplified it even more.

According to the blog posted by Microsoft, developers can file a bug keeping in mind the following:

  1. Use the hashtag #EdgeBug so our tool catches your bug and we can follow up with a link to the bug.
  2. Include a link to a reduced test case of the bug on codepen.io, jsfiddle.net, jsbin.com, or dabblet.com - this makes sure the bug is actionable on our end.
  3. Use the text remaining to make a title for your bug. Make sure it's succinct and descriptive!

Once the tweet is sent, you will receive a reply from @MSEdgeDev with a link of your bug report.

The company revealed that it was a developer, @LeaVerou, who suggested back in June the idea for users to be able to tweet Microsoft Edge bugs. Microsoft has also added some checks so that people don't start spamming any odd complaints using #EdgeBug.

The idea to tweet bug reports will be quite favorable for developers than having to go through the traditional method of reporting, which can be a long and slow process. For general users, however, using the Edge's built-in 'Send Feedback' is still the best way to report any issue.

Twitter just gave its Android app a Material Design makeover

Twitter just announced the global roll-out of design rework for its Android app. The new design follows Material Design principles outlined by Google in a constantly updated, "living document".

With the adoption of the Material Design language which has been around for almost two years now, Twitter joins the likes of Facebook Messenger, Imgur, Skype, and others who have also in the past rolled out updates based on the Material Design by Google. In fact, Google has borrowed the design concept to redesign some of its own apps like Google Analytics, Google Drive, Hangouts and YouTube.

Twitter now has a persistent top bar with tabs for the Twitter feed, notifications as well as direct messages. There is a persistent floating action button as well, to instantly send out a new tweet. This is similar to the ‘compose new email’ button in the Gmail app. A swipe to the right reveals a profile drawer with additional options, including highlights, lists and contacts.

This replaces a dual navigation bar on top, one of which had the compose tweet and profile options, the other one had home, hashtags and replies. Scrolling to the top and pulling down reveals the Search icon now, which was previously persistently available on the top right. The new design gives a cleaner interface, and brings into focus all the most important actions, while hiding less frequently used buttons behind swipes.

The update is in the process of being rolled out globally.
What do you think of the Material Design makeover? Do you like it, or does it fall flat? Let us know in the comments section below.

Twitter takes aim at 'retail politics' in Latin America

(Reuters) - After seeing explosive growth across Latin America, Twitter Inc is now tapping into the region's other big passion besides soccer - politics.
The company dispatched its top political strategist to Brazil this week to give senators in one of its biggest global markets a pep talk on tweets and how to use the social network ahead of the October general election.
"The Latin American market is growing, and elections are good opportunities for Twitter," Adam Sharp said in an interview.
A former congressional aide in Washington, Sharp's job is to promote the use of Twitter as an indispensable work tool for governments and politicians.
In a year when Brazil, Colombia and half a dozen other Latin American nations are holding elections, the microblog allows politicians to increase the scope and speed of campaigns and profit from "scalable retail politics," Sharp told Reuters.
"Authenticity is the most critical tactic when it comes to using Twitter in politics," he said, adding that some Latin American leaders have been quick in recognizing the power of the platform for enabling direct communication with voters.
"I would encourage engaging more, using it less as just a broadcast platform and more for two-way dialogue," Sharp said.
Twitter was instrumental in the organization of massive anti-government demonstrations that rocked Brazil President Dilma Rousseff's popularity last year. She learned the lesson quickly, however, reactivating her own dormant Twitter account (@dilmabr) and even pioneering Q&A sessions with her 2.3 million followers.
As with celebrities and athletes, politicians are often followed by millions of people on Twitter, an audience the San Francisco-based company can monetize through advertisement.
With still low Internet penetration and rapid adoption of smartphones, Latin America is a fast-growing market for Twitter and other social networks like Facebook. Brazil is the company's fifth-largest global market, Mexico ranks in the top 10 and Colombia and Chile are not far behind.
No Latin American politician gets even close to U.S. President Barack Obama's online flock of 42.9 million, but the region is home to prolific users like Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos (@juanmansantos) with 2.8 million followers, Argentina's Cristina Fernandez (@cfkargentina) with 2.7 million and Mexico's Enrique Pena Nieto (@epn) with 2.6 million.
In Venezuela, where government critics complain of limited or no access to mass media, opposition leader Henrique Capriles (@hcapriles) uses Twitter to reach 4.4 million people.
Sharp said politicians often ask what Twitter stood to gain from the growing intersection between politics and social media.
"What I tell them is, let's focus on making you successful because our success comes indirectly from that," he said.
