Computex 2016: Qualcomm announces Snapdragon Wear 1100 platform With LTE for Wearables

Qualcomm has announced its latest processor for its Snapdragon Wear platform called the Snapdragon Wear 1100. Unlike the Snapdragon Wear 2100 that was shown off in February, which is meant for multi-purpose devices such as smartwatches, the Snapdragon Wear 1100 is targeted at performing specific functions.

Unlike the Wear 2100 SoC, the Wear 1100 SoC is more focused on simpler devices like fitness trackers. Apart from LTE, it also comes with support for WiFi and Bluetooth. Qualcomm has partnered with several companies like Aricent, Borqs, Infomark, and SurfaceInk providing reference software platforms in order to bring this new tech into the market.

The Snapdragon Wear 1100 SoC also brings slow power mode called Power Save Mode (PSM), a much needed in smartwatches today. Companies like Anda Technologies, inWatch and WeBandz announced plans to bring wearable products targeted for kids and elders using the Qualcomm chipsets alongside the reference platforms available.

Speaking at the keynote, Senior Director and Business Lead of Smart Wearables at Qualcomm, Pankaj Kedia spoke about the bright future of wearables and internet of things (IoT) in general. "We are truly excited about the wearable space by customer category, by OS, by product category," he said. Kedia concentrated on five key factors for the Snapdragon Wear 1100 platform. Small size, low power, smart sensing, always-on connectivity week long LTE standby, hardware based security and next-gen GPS. Snapdragon Wear 1100 is targeted to unleash the Kids smartwatch segment, he said.

The Snapdragon 1100 SoC joins the already existing Qualcomm portfolio available for wearables. Qualcomm has already introduced Snapdragon Wear 2100, CSR102x Bluetooth Smart 4.2 SoC, and Qualcomm SiRFStar location into the wearable market. The company claims that more than 100 wearable products are now available with processors from Qualcomm.

Qualcomm processors are synonymous with flagship smartphone with almost all OEMs across the globe. The IDC reports that wearable shipments increased by 171 percent last year. It grew from 28.8 million to 78.1 million units last year, and Qualcomm understandably wants to make the most of this acceleration.

The Snapdragon Wear 1100 measures 79 square mm, houses an ARM Cortex A7 processor, has a Cat 1 modem, supports Linux and RTOS and supports hardware level security. The chipset will start shipping on 31 May.

Apart from Qualcomm, Asus also unveiled a host of products at Computex. The company took the wraps off the Zenfone 3 (three variants), Zenbook 3, and the Asus Zenbo Household Robot with voice control.

Zenvolution: ASUS Announces a Macbook rival, 2 Surface Pro rivals, trio of Zenfones and a cute little robot, Zenbo

If you know me well, you may have an idea that I've always been an ASUS fanboy! So the Zenvolution was very important to me. Though I wasn't at the Humble House Taipei, for the launch I watched the whole event live! So go and follow me on Twitter as i live tweeted the whole event! So let's get started.

ASUS at its Zenvolution event on Monday, unveiled the Zenbook 3, 2 Transformer  2-in-1s, 3 variants of its Zenfone series and a home robot, Zenbo. Here is all the details on the products announced at Computex Taipei by ASUS.

Zenbook 3

Asus isn't shying away on its battle with Apple. It has announced its new ultra portable ZenBook 3, an 11.9-millimeter device ASUS chairman Jonney Shih described as the "the world's most prestigious laptop." ASUS at the Zenvolution was comparing it directly to MacBooks, promising an aluminum alloy device that weighed less than Apple's lightest laptops, and a processor "two times faster than MacBook."

The ZenBook 3 will also feature the company's highest screen-to-body ratio of any of its laptops — 82 percent. That screen is 12.5 inches, and is coated in gorilla glass. The body of the laptop has a full-size keyboard, a glass-covered touchpad, and a fingerprint reader that supports Windows Hello to make logging in possible without needing to type in your password.

The laptop will come in three Royal Blue, Quartz Grey, and something to compare with Apple, Rose Gold. A ZenBook 3 with an i7 processor and a 1TB solid state drive will be available for $1,999, or $1,499 with a 512GB SSD.

Transformer 3 Pro & Transformer 3

After Macbook, ASUS is setting its sights on the Surface Pro 4 with its latest Transformers 2-in-1s. The Transformer 3 Pro and Transformer 3 feature 12.6-inch displays with a resolution of 2880 x 1920 resolution with a pixel density of 275 ppi, and come with an integrated kickstand as well as portable keyboards.

Both 2-in-1s offer USB Type-C and Thunderbolt 3 connectors, as well as a full-size backlit keyboard with 1.4mm travel, a glass trackpad and fingerprint sensors. As you'd expect, the Transformer 3 Pro is the high-end offering, with a Core i7 CPU, up to 1TB PCIe SSD, 16GB of RAM, and 13MP cameras at the front and rear.

The Transformer 3 Pro will start from $999, while the Transformer 3 with 256GB SSD and keyboard cover will be available starting $799. You'll be able to pick up the 2-in-1s in grey or gold.

The Zenfone 3 trio: Zenfone 3 Deluxe, Zenfone 3, Zenfone 3 Ultra

ASUS also unveiled its new ZenFone 3 series with three variants: ZenFone 3, ZenFone 3 Deluxe, and ZenFone 3 Ultra - varying in different sizes and specifications.

The regular Zenfone 3 is positioned as a mainstream phone with strong design at a low price; the Zenfone 3 Deluxe goes for high-end performance and build quality; and the Zenfone 3 Ultra is centered around entertainment with a gigantic screen. All three of the models look to be far better built than the plastic Zenfone 2.

Starting with the base model, the Asus ZenFone 3 is priced at $249, and features a 5.5-inch full-HD (1080x1920 pixels) Super IPS LCD display. The smartphone is powered by a Snapdragon 625 processor paired with 4GB of RAM, and 64GB of inbuilt storage. On the camera front, there is a 16-megapixel rear camera with Sony IMX298 sensor. It packs a 3000mAh battery, and offers connectivity options like Wi-Fi 802.11ac, Bluetooth 4.2, Cat 6 LTE, and USB 2.0 Type-C connector. The ZenFone 3 (ZE552KL) will be available in Gold, Blue, Black, and White colour options.

The second variant is called the Asus ZenFone 3 Deluxe. It is priced at $499, and comes with a "full metal body with an invisible antenna design", which Asus claims is the world's first. It features a 5.7-inch full-HD (1080 x1920 pixels) Super Amoled display, and is powered by the Snapdragon 820 SoC paired with 6GB of RAM. The smartphone stores 64GB of inbuilt storage, with expansion via microSD card (up to 256GB).

The Asus ZenFone 3 Deluxe sports a 23-megapixel rear camera with Sony IMX318 sensor with 4K video support. It packs a 3000mAh battery that supports fast charging (Qualcomm Quick Charge 3.0) It supports connectivity options like WiFi 802.11ac, Bluetooth 4.2, Cat 6 LTE, and USB 3.0 Type-C connector. The Deluxe will be available in Gold, Silver, and Grey colour options. It is expected to hit the market in the third quarter of this year.

And lastly, a larger brother of both the phones, Asus ZenFone 3 Ultra that comes with a 6.8-inch full-HD (1920x1080 pixels) IPS LCD display. It is priced at $479, and is powered by a Snapdragon 625 SoC paired with 4GB of RAM. The inbuilt storage is 64GB, which can be expanded via microSD card (up to 128GB).

The smartphone houses a 23-megapixel rear camera with Sony IMX318 sensor. The ZenFone 3 Ultra (ZU680KL) packs a nice 4600mAh battery with Quick Charge technology. The connectivity options include WiFi 802.11ac, Bluetooth 4.2, Cat 6 LTE, and USB 3.0 Type-C connector. The smartphone will be available in Grey, Silver, and Pink colour options.

Zenbo, the cute little Robot

This is something different, and maybe on trend: a home robot. The robot can roam around independently, and take directions by voice command. ZenBo's face also acts as a touchpad interface: you'll be able to place video calls, shop online, as well as stream video content, when it's not blushing!

Zenbo looks a lot like a Eve from Wall-E, but appears to work like Amazon's Echo, providing recipe recommendations and similar services in response to voice queries. Users can also Zenbo to buy goods online, logging into accounts and inputting passwords with their voice, and take photos like an autonomous selfie stick.

The robot can also sing songs, dance to music, and tell stories, even promising to work as a tutor to children. The device stands about knee height to an average adult, comes equipped with a robotic voice that's somehow already grating, and will cost $599 when it rolls into homes.

7 "weird" thoughts Feminists Have

The more places I visit, people I meet, and books I read, the more I realize that, unfortunately, most people don't think the way feminists do. But I feel like most of the "weird" thoughts feminists have
which can be about everything from the representation of women in media to the environmental impact of tampons — are really just thoughts all humans should be having. So in that way, you might say that it's not having these thoughts in the first place that's truly weird.
Personally, I love that feminism challenges me to think differently than I'm "supposed to" about my body, my sexuality, my romantic relationships, my family life, my culture, my goals, my impact on society, how I eat, what kind of films I watch, how I interact with other women, and basically every other aspect of my life. Feminist thinking empowers me, and sometimes, it calls me on my bullshit, too. In fact, many of my "weird," feminist thoughts have helped me find the resolve to leave bad relationships, the courage to travel alone, and the conviction to be a more ethically and environmentally-conscious consumer.
To me, thinking like a feminist means thinking about how you can make your world a better place to live in. (Or, you know, how you can afford to watch feminist porn while on a budget.) Of course, I can't speak for all feminists, but I think it's safe to assume the following are seven "weird" thoughts most feminists have probably had at some point.

1. “I Can’t Believe I Used To Love This Movie”

Realizing the movies you cherished as a kid are actually offensive as hell is a sad thought most feminists don't get to avoid. Recently, I came to this realization when I tried to watch Dumb and Dumber with some friends of mine. I hadn't seen it in about 10 years, and I was really stoked to watch it as a grownup, but I couldn't even get halfway through it before I had to bail.
Lloyd and Harry treat all the women they meet like crap, and the female characters barely even call them out on it. In fact, with the exception of the woman who's trying to kill Lloyd and Harry, most of the women they run into are disturbingly meek. Oh, and the movie tries to make rape funny, too. I mean, I know Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels are supposed to be playing socially inept idiots, but the sexist, racist, and homophobic themes in this movie just aren't funny. I'm embarrassed that I ever liked it.
Then, of course, there all those Disney movies and teen rom-coms. We may still love them, but feel conflicted about them when we re-watch them, noticing everything that's problematic.

2. “I Hate How Much This Song Makes Me Want To Dance”

Any feminist who loves music has probably had this thought. I know I have. It really sucks, because songs like "679" by Fetty Wap and "Hotline Bling" by Drake or "Blurred Lines" by Robin Thicke are so dang dance-y — and even mood-boosting at times — but their lyrics are undeniably problematic.
I won't pretend being a feminist keeps me from listening to misogynistic music every once in a while. I mean, I don't think I'll ever stop enjoying the rhythmic beauty of certain songs, but as a feminist, I just can't dance around to sexist music without feeling conflicted — and I know I'm not alone on this one.

3. “I Wonder If My Friends Would Split The Cost Of A Feminist Porn Subscription With Me”

Feminists, like myself, enjoy porn just as much as anyone else. But most of the free stuff you'll find on mainstream sites is pretty clearly marketed to straight men — and can be very problematic. Unfortunately, the kind of porn that most feminists want to watch isn't typically free, because nothing good comes cheap.
This is why I've been thinking about asking a few of my friends to share the cost of a feminist porn subscription with me. I know for a fact I'm not the only feminist who thinks about stuff like this, either, because I got the idea from one of my NYC buddies. I mean, if friends can share online TV subscription logins, why not share porn, too?

4. “I Should Really Start Using More Eco-Friendly Period Products”

I love tampons, but every time I buy a box, I feel like I'm killing the earth. Most of us menstruating folks will end up throwing out between 10,000 and 15,000 pads and tampons in our lifetimes — all of which gets tossed straight into landfills.
Since feminism is about making the world a better place, I feel like most feminists can't help but think about the fact that switching to a menstrual cupor investing in some THINX period panties is one relatively easy way we can positively impact the health of our planet. Personally, I think about it every time I get my period, but I still haven't taken the time to make the switch — yet.

5. “Where Did This Milk Come From?”

Word. No female body (or any body) is for other people's enslavement and consumption, and #speciesism #sexism and #racism are all predicated on the same logic: that for one group of living beings it's just "different." #govegan #vegan #peta #feminism
A photo posted by Rachel Krantz (@rachelkrantz) on
OK, so I don't know that the majority of feminists have this thought, because I don't know if I ever would have thought about this if I hadn't briefly lived in New York and met some well-informed vegans. That said, I think a lot of feminists care about living ethically, and this includes where they get their milk.
Until recently, I just wasn't aware of all the horrors female cows go through just so people can drink milk and eat dairy, but after reading about howfemale cows are enslaved, forced to be perpetually pregnant, and then robbed of their children, I can't not think about where my milk and other dairy is coming from now.

6. “Did I Just Mentally Slut-Shame Her?”

I'll be the first to admit that I still find myself mentally slut-shaming women sometimes. I think of myself as a sex positive person, I love revealing fashion, and I think going topless should be legal everywhere, but that doesn't always keep me from making snap judgments about sex workers or women who wear super tight clothes. I hate it, and I don't even know it's happening until it's already happened, but I feel like slut-shaming is a culturally ingrained habit most feminists have to work hard to break.
Unfortunately, even the most staunch of feminists (like myself) were unconsciously conditioned to slut-shame from childhood, and that doesn't just go away overnight.

7. “Am I Being Too Feminist?”

We live in a culture where many people still have the mentality that continuing to "bring up" feminism and women's rights, especially when it concerns gender inequality in the West, is divisive and/or whiny. That's complete crap, though, because we wouldn't need to keep "bringing up" the current state of women's rights, both domestically and globally, if silence was an option. The answer to this question is obviously a resounding, "Nope!"

i have Hypochondria, And it is A real disorder — now not A Punchline

My life is controlled by an endless series of obsessions, intrusive thoughts, rituals, and fears, but I don’t have OCD — at least not technically. Instead,
I have a somatoform disorder better known as hypochondriaHypochondria, or health anxiety, is a preoccupation with having or acquiring a serious illness. As with OCD, health anxiety can cause persistent fears and reassurance-seeking behaviors, like, say, checking and rechecking your pulse for the one-hundredth time while standing in line at Starbucks.
The health anxious are often portrayed as comical worriers, clogging ERs with stubbed toes and chapped lips. And it's true to an extent. I've given myself breast exams at stoplights and had my hands down my pants checking groin lymph nodes more times than I can count. It's funny!
But it isn’t entirely accurate. I don't freak out over every little rash or headache. I don’t make weekly trips to the ER; I'd like to think I'm more reasonable than that. I'm not worried about germs—hell, I'd lick the floor of Grand Central Station for $20. Instead, it feels more like alarms are going off 24/7 telling me that something is very wrong with my body. I'm constantly on the lookout for something. I don't know what, but I'm certain it's there. I palpate my lymph nodes hourly. I check my moles daily. I've twisted myself into a pretzel just to see my cervix. I once found an actual breast lump and poked it until my entire breast was black and blue. The humor has long since left me.
Exercise and meditation certainly helps, but there are days when I'm so convinced that something is wrong that I cannot function. I shut down. I detach. I just fall off the radar.
It all started in third grade when my school sent home an informational flyer on Reye's syndrome, a rare disorder that causes swelling of the brain and liver, and mostly occurs in children and teenagers. For some reason that shattered my childlike notion of invincibility and I had a revelation: Sometimes people die and there's nothing grownups can do about it. My obsessions grew as I grew. I would learn about a new disease and add it to my roster of fears. Meningitis, lymphoma, ALS, mad cow—the list is endless, and it's always on my mind.
I've had my share of health scares. Two breast lumps, fibroadenomas, were removed ten years ago. I also had a 10cm endometrial cyst destroy my left ovary because it took six years to find a doctor to take my symptoms seriously. A simple ultrasound was all it took to see the mass. It was terrifying.
I see a therapist. I have a psychiatrist. I've tried many, many meds and have gone through an intensive outpatient OCD program. There was only one other hypochondriac in the program with me and the counselors didn't seem to know what to do with us. A lot of time was spent visiting health-related websites in order to "desensitize" us and make us less anxious. Honestly, it was just weird.
Exercise and meditation certainly helps, but there are days when I'm so convinced that something is wrong that I cannot function. I shut down. I detach. I just fall off the radar. My husband shoulders all parenting responsibilities alone, and that's not fair. He's unbelievably supportive, but even his patience wears thin.
Then comes the depression, because I've failed yet again as a spouse and a parent. This is where my therapist and psychiatrist serve as my cheerleading team, telling me to dust myself off and pick my life up again. But what life? After nearly twenty years of wallowing in fear, I don't have much of a life left. That's not exactly true. I have my wonderful husband and daughter, but beyond that I don't have much, and it's embarrassing.
Currently, I'm setting small goals, like trying to connect to my community and getting out more. Sometimes all that entails is "liking" something on Facebook. I'm looking into another outpatient program and I'm still searching for the right combination of meds. At this point I don't expect to get better, but I do hope that one day I'll find peace with illness. After all, it's inevitable that at some point my body will fail me, and all I can hope for is that I'm surrounded and supported by those who love me. And that can’t happen if I spend my life in hiding.
So my goal for today is to poke my head out and connect with fellow hypochondriacs of the world. I also hope I’ve done my small part to educate readers on what mental illness looks like. It’s different for everyone, but it’s a struggle that we’re all too often ashamed to talk about.
I did my part for today; let’s hope I can keep the momentum going.

7 weird signs and symptoms you are higher As buddies

Question: What if you start dating someone, all is well, you're having a good time together — but then, one day, you realize that you're not sure you want to be romantic with them? What are the weird signs you're better as friends? Or
what if you haven't started dating yet, but you're thinking about it, it's on the table, right, and you're wondering if you should take the plunge — if it would be a good idea — or if you should just stay friends or pursue a new friendship with this potential partner. What should you do?
Good news: I asked experts just these questions. Apparently, this is a pretty common phenomenon, and they had some great advice for anyone who has found themselves (or might someday find themselves) in such a situation, or some similar sitch. It's a common teeter-totter: Should we do this? Should we just stay friends? As everyone knows, once you take that romantic step with someone, you may never go back — and this is all the more important in cases when you've been friends forever. If the relationship doesn't work out, your friendship could be affected. Don't worry: Here are their thoughts on the signs you're actually better as pals with someone beyond the whole I-can't-imagine-being-intimate-with-them thing. But first, check out the latest episode on Bustle's Sex and Relationships podcast, I Want It That Way:

1. You Don't See Eye To Eye On Values

We can differ with BFFs on major principles, but it's harder when you're dating someone with whom you wildly differ on such things. Of course, that's totally doable too — it just presents more obstacles. "The best way to tell if you are better off as friends is [asking yourself] how much you respect their values," life coach Kali Rogers tells Bustle. "We can be friends with a lot of people with varying values, but it's totally different when you start dating them." There's a big reason for this, she adds: "Their values can easily become your values." If you have someone in your life who presses all of your buttons on important values, you might not want to get involved, even if you find yourself attracted to them. As Rogers puts it, "If you love being around someone but don't necessarily see eye to eye on things that are pretty important to you, it's best to stay friends."

2. You Feel Guilty You're Not Into Them

"If you’re dating someone who’s not your type or is incompatible, normally, you’d recognize that fact and move on without hesitation," New York–basedrelationship expert and author April Masini tells Bustle. "After all, why waste your time with someone who’s not going to be right for you?" That said, the guilt thing might be related to the fact that you actually harbor true feelings for the person you're dating — feelings of friendship. "If you start feeling guilty about not being into him [or her], it’s probably because you like him [or her] as a friend — just not as a lover," she says. Guilt is a telltale factor, and it "tells a part of the story," Masini says. "Get to the [bottom of the] rest of it by figuring out why you feel [guilt]," she says.

4. You're Comfier Hanging Out Than On Dates

"I think in this situation that if you are more comfortable just hanging out with that person than when you are on a date, the friendship card might be too strong to ignore," Rob Alex, who created Sexy Challenges and Mission Date Night with his wife, tells Bustle. "If you feel differently when you are on an official date with this person, it is time to step back and survey if your friendship with them is more valuable than a possible romantic relationship." If you've been friends for a long time, you might not want to give that comfortability up — and risk losing it permanently. "We have a bond with friends, and when we can have that friendship inside our relationship, it is magical — I know, as I have that," he adds. "However, if the relationship starts to strangle the friendship, then both situations might not be able to survive."

5. There's No Effort On Their Part

When the other person isn't really making the same effort, you should just aim for a friendship (at most), zen psychotherapist and neuromarketing strategist Michele Paiva tells Bustle. "Even if they are afraid or shy, you need someone who will get out of their comfort zone for you to make it work," she says. If you really like them, try a friendship. Or just let things go altogether and find someone who will make an effort for you.

6. You Can't Imagine A Road Trip With Them

The best, strangest way to tell that you'd be better as friends with someone: "You know that you never would want to be stuck in a car cross-country with them, because you would annoy each other too much," Stefanie Safran, Chicago's "Introductionista" and founder of Stef and the City, tells Bustle. Well, that is one way to tell! Though I'd be more of one to argue that a true friend should be just as great of a road-trip partner as a lover, it is true that some more fair-weather friends might be perfect for an afternoon brunch but not great for a weeklong trip crammed in the car. That said, I'm all for true friendship, so if you can't picture road-tripping with someone, you might do best if you aren't friends or lovers with this particular character.

7. You're Not Daydreaming About Them

Cecil Carter, CEO of dating app Lov, tells Bustle,"If you don’t find yourself thinking about them, yet you enjoy their company," you should probably stick to friendship. It's true: Like Safran, Carter points out the importance of visualization and imagination. If you aren't sitting around daydreaming about someone, you're likely not going to have a solid romance. Being in love is all about fantasy, especially at the beginning.
