Galaxy Note 7's production permanently stopped

Samsung has announced that it is ending the production of the Galaxy Note 7 and permanently discontinuing it worldwide after reports of devices it had deemed safe catching fire.

The decision comes immediately after the company issued a press release asking users to power down all original and replaced Note 7 units, and for retailers and career partners to stop sales and exchanges of the smartphone.

"We remain committed to working diligently with appropriate regulatory authorities to take all necessary steps to resolve the situation." said Samsung on its blog.

The decision to end the Note 7's production is the final step in a rather complicated journey. After being announced back in August and being met with generally positive reviews, the Note 7 first came under fire or should I say got fired after reports of units exploding surfaced on the internet. After 35 cases had been reported, Samsung issued an official recall of the device, which sent everyone into a tizzy with airlines and airport authorities calling for an official ban on usage of the device in several countries.

Samsung did the best on its part, replacing not just the affected but every Note 7 it sold and issuing a new device with an updated battery pack and a green battery indicator so the customers and authorities alike could tell them apart. It even restricted the older devices from charging beyond 60% so people who hadn't replaced theirs yet wouldn't overcharge them.

But after the replacement units also started catching fire, most notably one on a Southwest Airlines flight 994 from Louisville to Baltimore, which had to be evacuated when a passenger's replacement Note 7 caught fire, Samsung eventually asked everyone to power them down.

And finally did what was inevitable and, some might argue, what should have been done from the beginning, pulled the plug entirely on the Note 7.

Samsung Galaxy S8 may launch early to make up for the Note 7 mess: Report

Samsung may have to advance the launch of its next flagship smartphone - believed to be dubbed Galaxy S8 - after the Galaxy Note 7 fiasco, claims an analyst. Additionally, new details have started to emerge regarding the new Samsung flagship including the model names, and some new features.

The Korean Herald reports a quote from analyst Kim Sang-pyo of KB Investment & Securities who states that the Korean electronics giant may advance the launch of its flagship Galaxy S8 smartphone.

"Regardless of the sales resumption, an earlier launch of a new quality flagship model seems to be the most realistic solution to dealing with the current recall crisis," reports the Korean Herald.

Kim Sang-pyo suggests the South Korean company could offset this crisis by advancing the launch of the Galaxy S8 and Samsung's profits could take a hit if it launches its next flagship by the end of the the first quarter of next year (2017). Also, another analyst from Mirae Asset Securities concluded that Samsung could reduce sales impact of the Note 7 from the recall by pushing out the next flagship model early instead of putting resources into elevating Note sales.

Both predictions do hint at possibility of the Samsung Galaxy S8 arriving early. But there are other indicators that hint at an earlier launch too. SamMobile, for example, has some insider information which points out Samsung is already working on the Galaxy S8 and that there will be two smartphones at the next launch, both possessing dual curved edge displays.

Sammobile also reports that Samsung is giving the number 4 a miss because of "Tetraphobia." The company is said to believe the digit 4 has associations as bad luck and this is one of the reasons it chose to go for model numbers SM-G950 and SM-G955 for alleged Samsung Galaxy S8 Dream and Dream2 models respectively. The report adds that Samsung has done this in past as well when the company launched the Galaxy S4 as GT-I9500 while the Galaxy S3 came with model number GT-I9300.

Other news coming from Weibo via PhoneArena hints at a new processor to debut in the Galaxy S8. It will be called the Exynos 8895 and improve image processing by a good 70 percent with a clock speed rated at 3.0GHz. Add to this the 10nm manufacturing process that should lead to better battery savings.
