Early George Harrison guitar fetches $657,000 at Beatles auction

A red rose is placed next to a portrait of former Beatle GeorgeHarrison on the gates of the Abbey Road Studios in London November 30,2001

(Reuters) - An electric guitar played by George Harrison on British television before the Beatles' U.S. "invasion" fetched $657,000 at auction on Saturday in New York, topping pre-sale estimates, Julien's Auctions said.
Harrison, who died in 2001 at age 58, played the black-and-white 1962 Rickenbacker 425 electric guitar on 1963 appearances on the British TV shows "Ready Stead Go!" and "Thank Your Lucky Stars" with the Beatles.
Harrison also played the guitar during the sessions when the Beatles recorded "I Want to Hold Your Hand" and "This Boy" in October 1963, months before they brought "Beatlemania" to the United States, launching the British Invasion of rock bands.
The guitar was estimated to sell between $400,000 and $600,000, Julien's said ahead of the auction.
Harrison bought the guitar in 1963 in Mount Vernon, Illinois, while visiting his sister in the United States, the auction house said.
Also sold at the auction was a handwritten placard with doodles signed by John Lennon and Yoko Ono from their 1969 anti-war "bed-in" in Montreal, which fetched $187,000. A Hofner bass rented by Paul McCartney in the mid-1960s sold for $125,000.
Other notable sales from the auction included a white jumpsuit worn by Elvis Presley during a 1971 concert that fetched $197,000, and 1990 red Rolls-Royce Corniche III convertible owned and used by Lady Gaga that sold for $125,000.

Britain's wealthiest people are richer than ever, study finds

Presenter Emma Watson poses at the 86th Academy Awards in Hollywood, California March 2, 2014

(Reuters) - Britain’s wealthiest people are richer than they have ever been, with a combined fortune of 518.9 billion pounds ($874 billion) – equivalent to a third of the nation’s gross domestic product, according to an annual study.
The Sunday Times Rich List for 2014 shows that the 1,000 richest men and women have surged to new heights, with their combined wealth rising by 15.4 percent on last year’s total of 449.6 billion pounds.
They include TV chef Jamie Oliver, former Tesco supermarket boss Terry Leahy and, in the under-30s list, "Harry Potter" star Emma Watson.
“I’ve never seen such a phenomenal rise in personal wealth as the growth in the fortunes of Britain’s 1,000 richest people over the past year,” said Philip Beresford, who has compiled the list since 1989.
"The richest people in Britain have never had it so good," he told Reuters. "The challenge now for the government and the rich themselves is to see this wealth percolate downwards and outwards, out of London and towards the north and west of the country."
The enormous wealth of those on the list contrasts sharply with the stretched finances of ordinary Britons, many of whom are struggling to cope with the effects of five years of austerity.
Last week, the first part of the Rich List found the number of billionaires living in Britain had risen to more than 100 for the first time, with Indian-born brothers Sri and Gopi Hinduja the country's wealthiest people with a combined 11.9 billion pounds.
They replaced Russian business magnate Alisher Usmanov at the top after the Arsenal football club shareholder dropped a place as his fortune fell to 10.65 billion pounds.
Only three of the top 20 are British, with David and Frederick Barclay, the publishers and property developers, the only self-made billionaires in this group.
The richest Briton, the Duke of Westminster, is ranked 10th with a property-based fortune of 8.5 billion pounds.
The super-rich want to live in Britain because of "culture, financial services, nice tax regime, good education for their kids and a nice lifestyle where they meet their friends", Beresford said.
APPLIANCES AND CANDY CRUSH
The second part of the List, extracts of which were released ahead of its publication in this weekend's Sunday Times, showed Jamie and Jools Oliver had seen their fortune go up by 90 million to 240 million pounds, ranking them equal 396, on the strength of their restaurant chain and related businesses.
Queen Elizabeth has added 10 million pounds to her personal wealth and is now ranked equal 285th with 330 million pounds.
John Roberts, creator of household appliance Internet retailer AO.com, makes his first appearance on the list with 410 million pounds. He is one of five investors to benefit from the AO.com float in February, who are all new entries.
Four members of the management of King Digital Entertainment, the company behind the addictive Candy Crush Saga computer game, join the list for the first time.
Another new entrant is former Tesco supermarket boss Leahy, worth 100 million pounds and ranked 863.
In the list of the 50 Young Rich, aged 30 and under, 24-year-old "Harry Potter" star Watson is now worth 30 million pounds, up 3 million.
Husband and wife Marcus Mumford 27, and Carey Mulligan, 28, enter the young list with a joint fortune of 13 million pounds from music and films.

Justin Bieber has been arrested after police say he drag raced

Justin Bieber poses for photographers before a news conference at a hotel in Mexico City.
Pop star Justin Bieber has been arrested after police say he drag raced on a Miami Beach street in a yellow Lamborghini and failed a sobriety test early Thursday

Miami Beach police confirmed the 19-year-old singer's arrest in a tweet from the department's official account.

Officers saw two cars racing at 4:09 a.m. Thursday, with two vehicles apparently used to block the area off, Miami Dade-Police spokesman Sgt. Bobby Hernandez told WSVN in South Florida.

The second car was a red Ferrari, and that driver was also arrested, says Hernandez. Both cars were towed.
Bieber failed a field sobriety test and was taken to the Miami Beach police station for a Breathalyzer and processing, he added. Bieber will be transported to the Miami-Dade County jail.
Earlier this month, officials said that detectives in California searched Bieber's home looking for surveillance footage that might serve as evidence the pop star was involved in an egg-tossing vandalism case that caused thousands of dollars in damage to a neighbor's home. Officials said Bieber was at the home and cooperated with authorities.

In that case, authorities arrested one member of Bieber's entourage on suspicion of drug possession: Lil Za, a rapper whose real name is Xavier Smith.

After being taken to jail, Smith had felony vandalism added to his potential charges and was released on bail at about 8:15 p.m.

The singer lives in a gated community in Calabasas, a celebrity enclave about 30 miles (50 kilometers) northwest of downtown Los Angeles.

Previous investigations into Bieber's conduct by the sheriff's department have not resulted in charges.

In October, prosecutors declined to charge Bieber after a neighbor complained he drove recklessly through the area. Prosecutors in November 2012 also declined to charge the singer after a paparazzo accused him of punching and hitting him after leaving a Calabasas movie theater.

Troubled singer Justin Bieber has been accused of an attempted robbery by an unnamed woman -
The 20-year-old pop star is being investigated by the Los Angeles Police Department after his alleged robbery attempt on May 12 at Sherman Oaks Castle Park in LA, said The Hollywood Reporter.

According to reports, the incident took place when a woman with her daughter took photos of Bieber, prompting him to allegedly snatch her phone and scream at the pair, making the girl cry.

"Detectives are currently interviewing the victim. It was reported at 10.30 pm Monday night to our Devonshire location and occurred earlier in the day in the Valley," Officer Rosario Herrera said.

"As of right now, no arrest has been made and detectives are currently interviewing the victim," he added.

Bieber's latest run-in with the law comes three weeks after he was detained at LA International Airport on April 24 and questioned by US Customs and Border Patrol officials after returning from Asia, however no formal action was taken and he was released after four hours.

The pop star's Miami trial for driving under the influence and other charges will begin on July 7.
