Hacker group OurMine hacks into Sony Music’s Twitter account

In a yet another high-profile Twitter account compromise this year, the hacker group OurMine broke into Sony Music’s Twitter account, flashing a news that famous singer Britney Spears "is dead by accident".

"Britney Spears is dead by accident! We will tell you more soon #RIPBrtiney," the tweet from OurMine read late on Monday. As soon as this was tweeted, Sony Music immediately swung into action and tweeted after recovering their handle @SonyMusicGlobal: "We saw a new IP logged in to the account a few minutes ago and the tweet is posted by a new IP so @britneyspears is still alive #OurMine."

Both these tweets have now been removed from Sony Music Global’s account.

Spears' manager Adam Leber was quoted by CNN as saying that the pop star was alive, officially debunking the rumour.

OurMine has previously hacked into some high-profile Twitter handles in the past, including those of Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg, Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey, Niantic head John Hanke and Evan Williams, the co-founder and former CEO of Twitter.

OurMine also hacked into BuzzFeed’s website in October and accessed Twitter accounts of Netflix and Marvel.

"We don’t know who is our next target," OurMine had told CNET in an email last week.

OurMine hacked BuzzFeed News, defaced multiple articles; accuses them of publishing "fake" news

BuzzFeed News, Buzzfeed's news site had reportedly been breached by hacker group OurMine. The hackers "vandalized" many of BuzzfeedNews' reports and left messages stating, "Hacked by OurMine team, don’t share fake news about us again, we have your database. Next time it will be public. Don’t f[***] with OurMine again."

The hack was in retaliation to a BuzzFeed story(mirrored here) that exposed an alleged member of OurMine. OurMine denied any connection to the alleged member of the group and seem to have protested by, of all things, hacking BuzzFeed News.

BuzzFeed tried to take down the affected posts "within minutes" and that BuzzFeed was working to restore all stories in their original form.

OurMine's reference to a database might seem menacing, but there's no indication from OurMine or BuzzFeed as to what that database contains.

I found at least one post on the BuzzFeed News site that's still to be purged of OurMine.

Lately, OurMine has been making a name for itself by going around hacking Twitter accounts of prominent celebrities, including those of Mark Zuckerberg, Sundar Pichai, and Jack Dorsey.
