Motorola Moto M to Launch Soon in India

Motorola on Monday confirmed that the Moto M smartphone will soon be launching in India. The Lenovo-owned company took to Twitter and teased an image of the Moto M metal-clad smartphone.

Motorola's first all-metal smartphone, the Moto M, was unveiled earlier this month in China. It was launched at CNY 1,999 (roughly Rs. 19,700). You could expect the pricing of the Moto M to remain around this range when it launches in India.

Apart from sporting an all-metal body, the Moto M features antenna bands running on the top and bottom edges at the back. It runs on Android 6.0 Marshmallow and features a 5.5-inch full-HD (1080x1920 pixels) 2.5D IPS display with a pixel density of 401ppi. It is powered by a 64-bit MediaTek Helio P15 processor clocked at 2.2GHz coupled with 4GB of LPDDR3 RAM. It packs 32GB inbuilt storage and supports expandable storage via microSD card (up to 128GB). The dual-SIM smartphone features hybrid SIM slot which means it supports a Micro-SIM or microSD card in the second SIM slot.

The Moto M sports a 16-megapixel rear camera with dual-LED flash, a f/2.0 aperture, and supports PDAF (phase detection autofocus). It also sports an 8-megapixel front sensor. The smartphone is backed by a 3050mAh battery, and also comes with support for fast charging.

Much like several Moto smartphones, the Moto M also comes with splash proof design (or nano-coating) which means it can bear light rain splashes. The handset supports 4G with VoLTE, Wi-Fi 802.11ac, Bluetooth v4.1, GPS/ A-GPS, USB Type-C (USB 3.1), NFC, and 3.5mm connectivity options.

Review: Moto E3 Power; Surely a Batteryful Phone; But not a Powerful one!

When Motorola announced its comeback to the Indian market back in 2014, Moto E, a budget-friendly phone played a major role in its success. The company received a massive response to the first Moto E launch, even leading Flipkart servers to crash and units to go out of stock within minutes.

Well, Motorola did try the same strategy with its second-generation Moto E but didn't quite achieve the same level of success. And now here's the third generation of its budget-friendly smartphone and the first one post takeover. Lenovo has launched the third-generation Moto E dubbed as the Moto E3 Power, thanks to its bigger battery. But is it worth your money? Let's check it out.

In The Box

Motorola Moto E3 Power comes packed in a very neat and sober looking box with the Motorola logo in the top center and the Lenovo branding at the bottom right. Inside the box, the first thing you'll notice is the handset itself. Further down there's the 10W Charger, microUSB Cable, standard in-ear headphones, the star of the party a 3500 mAh Battery and interestingly a screen guard.

Look and Feel

The ridged plastic design of the Moto E3 Power adds a personality to the smartphone. It's distinctly Moto, but it won't feel like every other phone out there. Also, the back and battery are removable, which is quite rare in the world of non-removable batteries.

It's flat, mostly, and has curves around the edges, just so it's comfortable. It sits well in the hands and it stays there, without slipping away. The back panel, as I mentioned is removable, has this very fine textured finish that gives the phone a sophisticated look, and improves grip. This is a phone that you would love to hold in your hands and the five-inch form factor means it's also very comfortable to operate with one hand. Just like the Moto E of Motorola's culmination period, the Moto dimple on the back stays on, but the camera module now rests behind an oblong piece of glass-like plastic that is surrounded by a fine chrome lining.

At 153.5 gram and 9.5 mm, the Moto E3 Power retains the chunkiness of past Moto Es, which also means that it is still heavier and thicker than rival phones in the market. It also has those wide chunky bezels I had been missing after using the OnePlus 3.

Moreover, the Moto E3 Power also has a water-repellent nanocoating that protects the phone from accidental spills, splashes or light rain. Keep in mind, it is not exactly waterproof but it kind of helps.

The volume and power buttons are on the right, while the left is blank. The 3.5mm audio jack is on top, and the Micro-USB charging port is on the bottom.

The Moto E3 Power comes with a 5-inch HD IPS LCD display with a 720x1280 pixel resolution that roughly translates to 294ppi pixel density. Brightness levels are just about adequate and adaptive brightness works as it should. Viewing angles are just about adequate as well, with just a hint of discoloration when you tilt the screen sideways. The colors look rich and vibrant, and the display also is smudge-resistant so it is not very prone to smudges and fingerprints.

Specifications

The Moto E3 Power is powered by a 1GHz quad-core MediaTek MT6735 processor coupled with Mali T720 GPU and 2GB of RAM. It comes with 16GB of internal memory which is further expandable by up to 32GB via a microSD card slot. The dual-SIM phone supports 4G LTE (VoLTE-ready) and USB OTG. The phone comes with separate slots for two SIM cards and one microSD.

To not disappoint you further, the Moto E3 Power in no way is as powerful as Lenovo would want you to believe considering its name. The phone is in no way meant to be bought if you plan on gaming with it. Even basic games like Subway Surfers are receptive to a few lags, particularly during long periods of gameplay.

But the main USP of the phone is its battery life, and it's living up to it. The phone is backed by a 3,500mAh removable battery. Battery life is phenomenal. Lenovo had claimed it to last a day on this one. But some of my tests have shown it could last even longer using the phone's inbuilt battery saving option. Of course, Android Marshmallow's Doze functionality is to be appreciated for it.

The included fast charger is estimated to deliver up to 5 hours of power in just 15 minutes of charging, according to Lenovo. And the company sort off delivers its promise by delivering up to 5 hours of power in around 20 minutes of charging.

The front-firing mono speaker on the Moto E3 Power is fantastic. It gets really loud with little or no distortion at peak volume. Voice quality during calls made with the Moto E3 Power was also excellent.

The Moto E3 Power runs Android 6.0 Marshmallow with very minimal tweaks from the company. The unit that we played with had the Google Now launcher which was set as the default.

There are not many third-party apps installed on, the phone which is good for users as they get the most out of the 16GB of onboard storage. The phone supports storage expansion via a microSD card up to only 32GB. Additionally, Lenovo is also offering two years of free photo storage on the Google Photos app.

Camera

Well, the camera is a feature you always consider while buying a smartphone, right? The Moto E3 Power comes with an 8-megapixel camera on the rear with f/2.2 aperture, autofocus and LED flash. On the front, you get a 5-megapixel snapper.

Although focus and shutter speed are fairly respectable, quality of photos snapped with the Moto E3 Power's rear shooter is average at best. Photos clicked in good light come out well, with a decent amount of detail and mostly accurate colors.

The front camera, meanwhile, clicks average selfies. They would be just about sufficient for posting on Facebook and Instagram and nothing else. The rear shooter can record 720p videos but slow-motion and time-lapse videos are not supported.

Didn't read it all? Don't worry here's the verdict.

At Rs. 7,999, Lenovo's Moto E3 Power seems like a decent buy. But if you're planning on playing games on it, I'd advise you to add Rs. 1000 more to your budget and go buy the Moto G4 Play (even though it has a smaller battery).

The sole reason to buy the Moto E3 Power is its battery life. Though the Moto E3 Power doesn't provide the experience that Motorola promises and isn’t a worthy purchase, it does what it says to be doing and that's providing you a great battery with top-ups such as great display and a fairly excellent call quality.

Moto Z to launch in India on 4 October

Motorola recently announced the budget friendly Moto E3 Power for its Indian consumers and now it is all set to launch its flagship smartphone. The Moto Z will be officially making its way on 4 October in India as the company has sent out invites confirming the launch day.

The company's first ever modular smartphone made its debut at the Lenovo Tech World conference in June earlier this year. The smartphone currently has three variants; the Moto Z, Moto Z Force and Moto Z Play, but there is no confirmation if Moto will launch all three of them.

The main attraction of the Moto Z lineup is the 16 magnetic connector pins at the back where one can simply snap on 'Moto Mods'. These Moto Mods are modules which add or enhance the capability of the smartphone. Some of them include battery packs, a JBL speaker, a Pico projector and a high-end Hasselblad camera. The mods are also expected to launch with the smartphone.

As far as the specs of the smartphones are concerned, the Moto Z features a 5.5-inch QHD (2560×1440) AMOLED display, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 processor with 4GB RAM, 64GB of internal memory which is further expandable via microSD card, 4G LTE connectivity, a fingerprint scanner. In the camera department you get a 13MP unit at the back with with an f/1.8 aperture, laser autofocus, OIS and dual LED flash while on the front there is 5MP camera. Running on Android 6.0 Marshmallow the battery is rated at 2,600 mAh battery. Oh, and you don’t get a 3.5mm audio jack, so audio is routed via the USB Type-C port.

The Moto Z Force is pretty much similar in looks and design, it is slightly bulky and offers the shatter-shield protection just like the Moto X Force. Other differences include a larger 3.500mAh battery and a better 23MP camera on the back.

On the other hand, the Moto Z Play is a more nimble version and features a 5.5-inch display with a full HD resolution (1920×1080 pixels), a Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 processor with 3GB of RAM and 32GB storage, a 16MP primary camera with dual-LED flash and a 3,510mAh battery.

Moto Z to Launch in India This Festive Season, Lenovo Confirms

Chinese technology company Lenovo will bring the much-awaited modular smartphone Moto Z to the Indian market this festive season. The Moto Z, which was unveiled globally in June this year, allows users to attach a set of accessories called Moto Mods to the back of the device that adds various functionalities to the device.

"We will launch 8 new devices, of which six we have already announced, in this festive season... This includes the Moto Z," Lenovo India Executive Director Mobile Business Group Sudhin Mathur told PTI.

While Mathur declined to comment on the timeline of availability of Moto Z in India, sources say that the product could be launched in the first or second week of October.

Moto Z is currently available in markets like the US, the UK, and Latin America in three models (Moto Z Play, Moto Z, and Moto Z Force).

Lenovo, which had acquired Motorola from Google in a $2.9 billion deal in 2014, is betting on India to contribute significantly to its global growth. Last year, Lenovo's revenues from India grew about 90 per cent while its overall revenues were up 68 percent.

According to research firm Gartner, smartphone sales are expected to slow down in 2016 globally, rising only seven percent compared to double-digit growth seen in previous years. This is on the back of slower sales growth in mature markets like Europe and Japan. India, on the other hand, remains an opportunity and presents the highest growth potential, Gartner said.

As expected, Lenovo on Monday launched the Moto E3 Power in India. The smartphone has been priced at Rs. 7,999, and will be exclusively available to buy via Flipkart from Monday midnight. It is also eligible for the Reliance Jio Welcome Offer.

The company was earlier expected to launch the Moto E3 smartphone in the country, however, it has launched its battery-focused smartphone instead - the Moto E3 Power. The company at the event also revealed that there are over 3 million Moto E users in India.

The Moto E3 Power bears a bigger battery compared to the Moto E3 (3500mAh compared to 2800mAh), however, that's not the only difference. It sports twice the memory - 2GB of RAM instead of 1GB - and twice the inbuilt storage - 16GB instead of 8GB. Both smartphones support storage expansion via microSD card (up to 32GB). The E3 Power also bears 4G LTE connectivity, with VoLTE support, apart from water repellent nano-coating. It comes with a 10W charger in the box, and the company is claiming the battery can rapidly charge, delivering 5 hours of battery life in 15 minutes.

The Android 6.0 Marshmallow-based Moto E3 Power is a dual-SIM (4G+3G) smartphone that bears a 5-inch HD (720x1280 pixels) display. It is powered by a 64-bit 1GHz quad-core MediaTek MT6735P processor, and packs a 8-megapixel rear camera with LED flash, which offers features like 720p HD video capture and burst mode. It also bears a 5-megapixel front-facing camera with a beautification mode.

Connectivity options on board include Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, A-GPS, Bluetooth v4.0, 3G, and 4G LTE (Cat. 4). Sensors include proximity sensor, ambient light sensor, and an accelerometer. It weighs in at 153.5 grams, and measures 71.6x143.8x9.55mm. The company is also touting 2 years of free photo storage on Google Photos.

The company is also introducing launch offers that are valid till midnight on Tuesday. An exchange offer of up to Rs. 7,000 has been announced, as well as a no cost EMI plan of Rs. 1,334 per month for 8 months. Buyers will get a free 32GB microSD card bundled, and there is a Rs. 800 cashback offer on SBI debit and credit cards. Buyers will also be able to purchase the Moto Pulse headset for a reduced price of Rs. 499 alongside.

Motorola Criticizes Samsung for Stealing Its 'Always On' Display Feature

Samsung is all set to bring the Galaxy Note 7 in India on September 2 for Rs. 59,900. The company highlighted many new features of the smartphone at its event, one of them being the 'Always On' display that was first seen on the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge. However, Motorola has now taken a rather direct jibe at Samsung, accusing it of stealing the feature. The company further claims that it was the first OEM to introduce the display feature.

Of course, Motorola named it differently and called it Active Display back then. The company released a cryptic tweet from its official account that reads,

The first smartphone to sport this feature from Motorola was the Moto X that came out in 2013. However, it is worth noting that this similar feature was seen on old Nokia Symbian phones first. The Always On display feature was also seen Nokia N9 that was released in 2011.

Whatever the case may be, Motorola is keeping a close eye on what its competitors are up to. As mentioned, the Always On feature was first introduced by Samsung in the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge, but has been greatly improved on the Galaxy Note 7.

Pre-bookings for the Samsung Galaxy Note 7 in India will begin on August 22 and will go on till August 30. As part of the pre-booking offer, users can get the new Gear VR at a discounted price of Rs. 1,990. The company has also announced that interested users can avail of the Reliance Jio Preview Offer, which comes with access to the Jio Digital Life content service, alongside voice and data benefits for 90 days.
