Xiaomi just unveiled its own MacBook Air rival laptop, the Mi Notebook Air along with a metal-clad Redmi Pro


Xiaomi Redmi Pro and Mi Notebook Air laptop have been launched today by the company at a special event in Beijing. Redmi Pro will the new flagship smartphone in Xiaomi's budget Redmi series. The company claims to have sold 110 million Redmi smartphone since they were first launched in August 2013.

Xiaomi Redmi Pro has a 5.5-inch full HD OLED display. The smartphone gets a brushed Aluminium design with CNC chamfered edges, and a front fingerprint sensor. Redmi Pro runs the MediaTek's Helio X25 chipset with 10-cores (Two A72 cores), which is clocked at 2.5 Ghz and has a Mali T880 GPU for more efficient gaming. There's also a version with MediaTek Helio X20 processor.


The high-end 4GB RAM+128GB version costs RMB 1999, while the 3GB RAM+64GB version is priced at RMB 1699. The 3GB RAM+32GB version with MediaTek Helio X20 processor starts at RMB 1499. In India the Redmi Pro, if it launches, will have to come with a Snapdragon processor.


Redmi Pro will have a dual camera set-up as was indicated by the leaks. It has a 13 megapixel Sony IMX258 sensor camera on top for still images, and 5 megapixel Samsung sensor rear camera for depth on the bottom. Redmi Pro will come in Gold, Silver, Dark Grey. The battery is 4050 mAh. Redmi Pro goes on sale in China on August 6.


Xiaomi has also launched the Mi Notebook Air at the event, which the company claims is thinner than the Apple MacBook Air. Mi Notebook Air has a 13.3-inch full-HD display, edge-to-edge glass protection, and a full metal body.

Mi Notebook Air's dimensions are 309.6. x 210.9 x 14.8 mm and it weighs 1.28kg. In terms of ports, it has a HDMI port, two USB 3.0 ports, a Type-C USB port for charging and 3.5 mm headphone jack. The new Mi Notebook Air comes with a full-size keyboard with individual backlit keys, and the company claims this keyboard is ultra-thin with 1.3 mm keystroke depth.

The 13.3-inch version of the Mi Notebook Air has an Intel Core i5 processor, 8GB DDR4 memory, 256GB PCIe SSD, battery life up to 9.5 hours, AKG and Dolby speakers, and Windows 10 operating system. It is priced at RMB 4999, which comes to around Rs 50,419 on conversion.


Xiaomi Mi Notebook Air has also been launched in a smaller, and cheaper 12.5-inch version. The Mi Notebook Air with 12.5 inch full HD screen also gets a slim all-metal body, life time up to 11.5 hours, and runs the Intel Core M3 processor. It has 4GB of RAM + 128GB SATA SSD hard drive, built-in speaker and support for Dolby surround sound. This one is priced at Yuan 3499, which is around Rs 35,290 on conversion. The two Notebooks will go on sale on Xiaomi's website on August 2.


For Xiaomi which has expanded into India, Brazil and other markets after China, the Redmi series has been one of their biggest successes. Redmi Note 3 was launched in India at a price of Rs 9,999 (2GB RAM +16GB storage) and Rs 11,999 for the higher end 3GB RAM+32GB storage version, and has got rave reviews across the board.

Xiaomi has promised that it will bring more phones to India, and it remains to be seen if the new flagship Redmi Pro will also be launched here. Another question is if the company will bring the top end variants of this phone to India. The Mi Notebook Air’s India launch also remains to be seen.
