You Can Now Download Netflix Content and Watch It Offline

Netflix has announced you can now download select titles and watch them offline, a feature that should improve its prospects in markets like India where users often run into trouble while streaming due to poor or limited connectivity.

"Just click the download button on the details page for a film or TV series and you can watch it later without an internet connection," Eddy Wu, Director of Product Innovation at Netflix announced via a blog post on Wednesday.

The blog post suggests the download feature will only be offered on select titles, to begin with.

"Many of your favourite streaming series and movies are already available for download, with more on the way, so there is plenty of content available for those times when you are offline," the post adds. "For example, Orange is The New Black, Narcos and The Crown are available for download today."

The new feature is included in all Netflix plans, and you just need to make sure you are running the latest version of the Netflix app on iOS or Android to enjoy the feature.

Although Netflix has been partnering with some airlines to provide access to streaming content, the download feature means customers can finally take their own viewing profiles on the go or where there is no Internet access.

Customers have long demanded such a feature, and Netflix executives previously said it was "never going to happen." But in April, chief executive Reed Hastings said the company would "keep an open mind" about it as the company's international growth forced it to grapple with limited connectivity in some areas.

A few months later, rumors surfaced suggesting that a plan was in the works. And now, it appears that Netflix has relented, giving its customers what they had wanted.

Netflix competitor Amazon Video is set to make its entry into the Indian market in December, joining a host of local players like Hotstar, Hooq, and Hungama, among others. Netflix offers three plans - Basic (Rs. 500 per month), Standard (Rs. 650), and Premium (Rs. 800), making it one of the most expensive offerings in India.
