Xiaomi Mi 5s to be launched on 27 September in China

A lot has been heard about the Xiaomi Mi 5s, an alleged upcoming variant of the Mi 5 to feature Snapdragon 821. Now, there seem to be invites sent out by Xiaomi for an event in China suggesting that the company is all set to launch the device on 27 September.

Xiaomi has sent out invites with a notable 'S' hinting that the device would be the Mi 5s. Several leaks and rumors have been doing the rounds online stating that the Mi 5s will be a modified version of the Mi 5.

The key features of the device are expected to be a 5.5-inch display with 3D Touch, along with a powerful Snapdragon 821 clocked at 2.4GHz and coupled with a whopping 6GB RAM. On the storage front, we may be lucky enough to see 256GB of internal storage. However, some previous reports were hinting at two more variants, so we could probably get, 3GB RAM with 64GB onboard storage and 4GB RAM with 128GB onboard storage. However, a 256GB variant is also said to be in the list.

It is to run Android Marshmallow with a layer of MIUI 8. On the camera front, rumors point out at a 16MP rear snapper, and a 4MP front-facing camera. Another rumor also hints at a dual camera module on the back that is expected to come from Samsung. A fingerprint scanner, which should somewhat look like the iPhone 7 tactile home button, has also been rumored.

However, there is no official word on any of these specifications yet. Looks like, we should be able to confirm the specs soon on 27 September.

LeEco Pro 3 rumoured to feature 5,000mAH battery in a 7mm body

LeEco has made some impressive smartphones in the past and it looks like the company is going to keep up with the flow. A recent leak has popped up suggesting that the Chinese company is working on a new smartphone called the LeEco Pro 3.

While the hardware specs of the handset could include the new Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 processor, the real head turner could be design. GizmoChina suggests that the smartphone will feature a 5,000mAH battery packed in a slim design measuring at just 7mm. If true, then it will be quite an achievement as the Xiaomi Redmi 3S packs a 4,100 battery with an 8.5mm thickness while the Gionee M6 with its 5,000mAH battery is 8.2mm thick.

The Le Pro 3 scores over 163K points on the AnTuTu benchmark, 163546 to be exact, making it much more powerful than any other smartphone that we have seen lately. All thanks to the power packed specs which include Snapdragon 821 chipset, 6GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage. The smartphone is also likely to feature a 16MP rear camera, and an 8MP front-facing camera. The smartphone could also come with a new software that will have video content, social integration, and some more entertainment features. There is a possibility of new partnership as well.

No specific date for the launch is confirmed, but rumours point to a September launch in China. On the other hand, Xiaomi is also expected to launch the Mi Note 2 which will also feature a Snapdragon 821 processor.

[Insane] Turing announces phone with dual Snapdragon 830s, triple batteries, hydrogen fuel cell, other insane specs

When it comes to flagships these days, a lot of the specs are quite predictable, with most companies take the default route with the latest Snapdragon processor, anywhere between 4 and 6GB of RAM, a 1440p display and minimum 32GB of storage. But, it appears a company like Turing Robotics wants to really break the mould with its future flagship, which boasts dual Snapdragon 830 processors, 12GB of DDR4 RAM, 1TB of storage and even an iMAX 6K camera.

The device is known as the Turing Phone Cadenza and judging by its proposed spec sheet, it is the most powerful smartphone ever. While Qualcomm hasn't officially launched the Snapdragon 830 just yet, the Cadenza promises to pack two of them whenever it launches.

If that wasn't enough, you will also find 12GB of DDR4 RAM (2 x 6GB), and two 256GB main storage devices, alongside two 256GB microSD cards, bringing the total storage to over 1TB.

A lot of smartphone makers like to make a big deal out of the camera but the Cadenza promises to out-do them all with a 60-megapixel quad rear camera with support for iMAX 6K resolution. If you happen to be into selfies, there will also be two 20 megapixel front facing cameras. You'll be able to view those pictures and videos on a 5.8-inch 1440p display.

This is all packed inside of a Graphene Oxide body, which also has room for four SIM cards and even three batteries to keep everything powered. It isn't an Android device, instead Turing has opted to use Swordfish OS, which doubles as a Deep Learning AI. Essentially, this is a pocket-sized super computer.

Given that some of the components used aren't available yet, the Cadenza doesn't have a release date, but Turing hopes to get it out sometime next year. Expect it to be crazily expensive!

Xiaomi Mi Note 2 Rumoured to Launch on July 25

Until now, there have been several leaks related to the Xiaomi Mi Note 2, but none suggested a specific date for the launch of the smartphone model. Most rumors indicated that it might be launched in August. Now a new report says that the phone may launch on July 25.

"New rumors from China say that the Xiaomi Mi Note 2 will be announced on July 25," notes Gizmo China. The new rumor also suggests that the smartphone will sport a 5.7-inch display, 6GB of RAM, Snapdragon chipset and will come with a price tag of 2,499 Yuan (roughly Rs. 25,000). The details seem to be in line-with earlier leaks, apart from a difference in terms of price.

On Monday, the company shared a teaser that said "2>5" on Weibo. According to some interpretations online, ">" can be also read as 7 (which might be reference to the month July) while rest two numerals might be indicating the date 25 for Xiaomi's Mi Note 2 reveal. However, these are mere interpretations, and what the teaser actually means is anybody's guess.

Having said that, last month Gizmo China quoted Xiaomi co-founder and president Lin Bin as saying that the company will launch a flagship product in July.

All these factors indicate strongly that the smartphone could have a July 25 release date. However, we will still have to wait for an official confirmation from the company for details related to the event.

According to the leaks, the alleged Mi Note 2 is expected to come in three models - standard, high, and top-end. A Chinese Weibo tipster (first picked up by Mobipicker) had previously suggested that the Xiaomi Mi Note 2 may be priced at CNY 2,499 (approximately Rs. 25,000) for the standard 4GB of RAM and 32GB of storage model, while the 6GB of RAM and 64GB storage high model is tipped to come at CNY 2,999 (approximately Rs. 30,000). The tipster had also claimed a third top-end variant featuring 6GB of RAM and 128GB storage priced at CNY 3,499 (approximately Rs. 35,000)

[SPF v0.1.7] Smartphone Pentest Framework - Support of the SMS shell pivot

The smartphone penetration testing framework, the result of a DARPA Cyber Fast Track project, aims to provide an open source toolkit that addresses the many facets of assessing the security posture of these devices. We will look at the functionality of the framework including information gathering, exploitation, social engineering, and post exploitation through both a traditional IP network and through the mobile modem, showing how this framework can be leveraged by security teams and penetration testers to gain an understanding of the security posture of the smartphones in an organization. We will also show how to use the framework through a command line console, a graphical user interface, and a smartphone based app.

SPF first release includes a text based management console, a web based GUI, and a management Android app.

  • SPF Console: The console is a text based Perl program that allows Smartphone Pentest Framework users to perform all the server functionality of SPF.
  • SPF Web based GUI: The GUI is a web based front end for SPF that allows users to perform all the server functionality. It is a set of Perl based webpages.
  • SPF Android App: The SPF Android App allows users to use the mobile modem of the Android smartphone with SPF to send SMS messages, gather information, etc. Users can also perform server functionality directly from Android smartphones using this application.
  • SPF Android Agent: The SPF Android Agent is one of Smartphone Pentest Framework’s post exploitation options. It is transparent to the user and allows SPF users to perform post exploitation tasks such as privilege escalation, information gathering, and remote control on Android phones with the agent installed. Agents for iPhone and Blackberry platforms are currently in development.

Changes for 0.1.7
    Added SMS shell pivot

Note: There is also a new script to install SPF on the newest KALI Pentest Plateform (https://github.com/georgiaw/Smartphone-Pentest-Framework/blob/master/kaliinstall). Don’t miss it.
