OnePlus 3 goes official a little early, all specs revealed

OnePlus is holding a special press event to unveil the OnePlus 3 later today, but Amazon has already jumped the gun and unveiled the flagship in glorious detail. We are pretty sure you are all familiar with the OnePlus 3 thanks to the numerous leaks throughout the past few months, but here comes the confirmation.

The OnePlus 3 features a 5.5" Optic AMOLED display of 1080p resolution protected by a Gorilla Glass 4 and runs on the Snapdragon 820 chip with 6GB of RAM. The Kryo processor cores are clocked at maximum - 2x 2.2GHz and 2x 1.6GHz. OnePlus 3 has an internal storage of 64GB, non-expandable as expected.

The OnePlus 3 camera setup is rather interesting - there is a 16MP Sony IMX298 rear camera, optically stabilized, with phase-detection AF, a LED flash and 4K video recording. The front camera relies on an 8MP Sony IMX179 sensor with 1080p video capturing. The front snapper supports electronic image stabilization, which should improve the selfie videos.

Other interesting specs of the OnePlus 3 include a fingerprint sensor, a notification light, LTE Cat.6 and dual-SIM connectivity, NFC, and a 3,000 mAh battery with Dash Charge support (5V 4A or 20W).

Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow with Oxygen launcher will be in charge of the OnePlus 3. The device itself is made of anodized aluminum and will be available in Graphite and Soft Gold flavors.

The OnePlus 3 goes on sale in India, invitation-free, and costs INR 27,999 or $416. We'll know more about the international availability and the OnePlus 3 in a few hours when the official announcement event kicks off.

OnePlus 3 will be invite-free; launch set for 14 June

OnePlus has announced that the invite system will be done away with for OnePlus 3 buyers. To get an invitation to a OnePlus device, buyers had to request one from someone who already owned a device, or complete community engagement tasks on social media. Instantly buying a OnePlus device was not easily possible.

The reason the company had an invite system in place, was that they wanted a way to scale their inventory according to demand. OnePlus did not want flash sales, where users may not get a device and the entire stock gets over. At the same time, OnePlus could not just manufacture so many devices and wait for the stock to clear, as they had no idea of how much demand would be there for the phones. Now, the volumes of the sales have increased enough for OnePlus to do away with the invite system. Millions of invites were sent over the past two years.

The OnePlus 3 will launch in a virtual reality environment. It is the OnePlus headquarters in cyberspace. It is a computer generated futuristic environment. Those who are in The Loop can purchase the OnePlus 3 exclusively for two hours before anyone else. For India, the launch will start at 10: PM on June 14.

Another way to get your hands on the OnePlus 3 before anyone else does, is to participate in the OnePlus 3 critical appreciation program, or what OnePlus calls, its “trial by fire”. Fans are invited to try out and review the phone by signing up for The Lab. These phones belong to OnePlus though, and will have to be returned. The announcement that the invite system will be done away with for the OnePlus 3 comes via a forum post.

OnePlus Loop VR headset sold out in less than 1 minute

The OnePlus Loop VR headset, developed with Ant VR for people to experience the launch of the OnePlus 3 in a virtual space station sold out in less than 1 minute on Amazon India today. The sale started today at 12 PM and was sold out before the clock hit 12:01 PM. This headset was being offered free (almost) with the shipping cost being Rs 1.

The sale was limited to the Amazon App and the anticipation for the latest flagship from OnePlus, the OnePlus 3 can only be guessed by the speed at which the VR headsets sold out (along with the waitlist being full). We tried purchasing the OnePlus Loop VR headset via the the waitlist at 12:15 but could not get hold of one out here as well. There are no official numbers available at the moment, but we do know that there were a total of 30,000 headsets available worldwide. So it is safe to say that the number must have been more than a thousand.

The second batch of free OnePlus VR headsets will sold on 7 June, 2016 at 12PM. Head to this link to register yourself if you have not registered already. The sale will only be available for registered users. The VR headset boasts 100-degree field of view along with a Orthoscopic Lens and compatibility for most phones with display sizes between 5 to 6 inches. The headset only weighs about 366 grams, minimizing any problems for the user in terms of the weight.

This comes right after the OnePlus VR Launch App was rolled out along with the announcement that the OnePlus 3 will be available invite-free right from the launch.
