IoT solutions introduced to Mori village in Andhra Pradesh by Ericsson


Sweden-based multinational network services firm Ericsson on Thursday demonstrated at Mori village of Andhra Pradesh its two Internet of Things (IoT) solutions for creating smart and sustainable villages in the state. Connected Aquaponics and Smart Water Grid Management, were the two projects demonstrated in the presence of Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, after a three-month pilot.

"The ‘Connected Aquaponics’ and ‘Smart Water Grid Management’ IoT solutions being demonstrated here will help improve harvest and optimise water distribution. It has the potential to provide an improved life for millions of farmers in the country," said Anand Varadarajan, head of Ericsson Research, Chennai, at Ericsson India, in a statement.

The Connected Aquaponics integrates aquaculture and hydroponics for reuse of the ammonia-rich waste water from aquaculture for organic farming and recycles the water back to the aqua farm.

"Using wireless sensor network and Ericsson's AppIOT platform, we enable the monitoring of the aqua farm 24×7, thereby enabling the farmers with real-time information," the company said.

This enables the farmers to increase the yield as well as bring down the production cost with optimum use of the raw materials and repeated use of water.

On the other hand, the 'Smart Water Grid Management' solution has been designed to enable efficient use of natural water resources in the Godavari basin through the use of sensors and actuators.

The sensors measure the quality of water, flow of water and level in the water storage tanks across the village.

"Ericsson is deploying Smart City solutions in different parts of the world. We have used our global know-how and technological expertise to develop sustainable solutions for rural areas, like the ones being demonstrated at Mori. The connected Aquaponics and Water Grid Management IoT solutions being demonstrated here will help improve harvest, optimise water distribution and has the potential to provide an improved life for millions of farmers in the country," said Anand.

Ericsson earlier this year signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Andhra Pradesh government and the University of California - Berkley to help improve lives of farmers in and around Mori.

Qualcomm launches IoT-specific Snapdragon 600E and 410E Processors


Qualcomm has launched the Snapdragon 600E and Snapdragon 410E processors for embedded computing and Internet of Things (IoT) related applications. The company says the new processors can be utilised in a number of devices including digital signage, set-top boxes, medical imaging, point of sale systems, industrial robotics, and other IoT-related applications.

Qualcomm confirms that the Snapdragon 600E and 410E will be made available globally by third party distributors, initially through Arrow Electronics. Both the new Snapdragon 600E and 410E processors have been built from the foundation of the Snapdragon 600 and 410 processors. The company believes that being the first Snapdragon processors that will be available by distributors will make them "accessible in a variety of quantities to manufacturers of all sizes for embedded computing and IoT products."

As for specifications, the Snapdragon 600E features a 1.5GHz quad-core Qualcomm Krait 300 coupled with Qualcomm Adreno 320 GPU and Qualcomm Hexagon DSP which is said to be the "ideal processor" for advanced systems with 3D graphics. It supports integrated Bluetooth 4.0/LE (and 3.x), Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac, and GPS. It also supports expandable storage depending on a variety of use cases such as SATA, SD3.0, DDR memory, and eMMC storage among others.

The Snapdragon 410E features a 1.2GHz quad-core CPU coupled with an Adreno 306 GPU and Hexagon DSP. It supports Bluetooth 4.1/LE, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, and GPS.

"Snapdragon is a powerful and versatile processor with many potential applications in a wide variety of IoT applications and we can now offer this technology to a much wider range of customers with the additional benefit of long-term support and availability. The Snapdragon 600E and 410E bring together some of our best connectivity and compute technologies to meet the needs for a large range of embedded and IoT applications," Raj Talluri, Senior Vice President, Product Management, Qualcomm Technologies said.

Internet of Things: Google Building Fuchsia OS for IoT Devices


In what can be considered as an interesting new development, Google is building a new operating system. The new OS is called Fuchsia, and is probably the first operating system built by Google that is not based on the Linux kernel.

While Google hasn't announced any official details about the Fuchsia operating system, the tech giant released the project on GitHub. The description is at its cryptic best, and reads Pink + Purple = Fuchsia (a new operating system).

After Android Police's investigation of the extensive documentation, it found out that the new OS was largely built to favor IoT and embedded hardware. The rapid increase of products in this space has evidently led Google to build a lightweight OS that was more compatible with modern IoT hardware. However, Fuchsia also appears to be designed so that it can scale to support smartphones and desktop computers as well.


Firstly, Fuchsia uses a new Magenta kernel that is specifically designed to compete with other embedded hardware operating systems like FreeRTOS, and ThreadX. Google has used Dart as the main programming language, and has introduced support for Flutter hinting that it will use Material Design as the UI. The new OS is meant to be open source as well, with full details yet to be finalized.

Google could be building Fuchsia as a separate OS only for its IoT devices, and probably isn't looking to replace its Linux-based Android and Chrome OS software at all. It is building IoT devices like OnHub and Google Home, and is probably looking to build a lightweight OS to pair seamlessly with these devices. Alternatively, Google could just be testing this operating system, and it could just shelve the project before release. As there is no clarity from Google yet, all of this is mere speculation and should be taken as such.
