WhatsApp gets another big update; to add iOS 10 features; Android beta gains doodle feature

WhatsApp is preparing a major update to align with the public launch of Apple iOS 10. The upcoming version will support new features to be introduced in iOS 10 including Siri API, lock screen access, and rich notifications.

Siri API support will enable Siri to send messages and make calls (audio and video) to contacts using WhatsApp. iOS 10 keynote presentation at WWDC was heavily focusing on the upcoming update. This update will empower Siri to do automated tasks which are currently limited to Microsoft's Cortana. iOS 10 adds the ability to interact with notifications and apps on the lock screen. This will enable users to reply to messages directly from the lock screen.

iOS version will come with address book integration to enable quick messages and calls from the contact details page. Rich notifications support for iOS 10 is still in development, but it is not confirmed to make a cut in the upcoming update. Last but not the least, the company has added a 'Today Widget' to be included in WhatsApp when you peek of WhatsApp icon using force touch. The widget will allow you to access recent contacts from your chat list.

For Android users, the company has launched an updated version to the WhatsApp Play Store Beta branch includes Doodle tools for any given photo. The version includes the new forward picker which separates the contact list into two lists. The top portion includes the most frequent contacts and the list on the bottom include the address book in the device.

WhatsApp will also introduce an official "Announcements channel" to announce important changes and updates to the users. This feature makes us hopeful about the future rollout of "Channels" by companies or media organisations. Video calls can be enabled for rooted devices in Android, but both users should enable on their end. "Mention" feature, as previously stated, is ready for a wider rollout but needs to be enabled on rooted devices. One thing to note about the feature is the fact that this is limited to Group conversations and does not work on individual chats.

The new features were included in version 2.16.260 beta and higher, and not yet available publically. It is only available to beta testers. The update is presently only seen on Android, and iPhone users would have to probably wait a few days to see the new feature on their smartphones.

iPhone 2016 Pre-Orders Tipped to Begin on September 9

Noted tipster Evan Blass has been dropping information about release date of the upcoming iPhone every day this week, and after saying that the iPhone 2016 will hit the shelves on September 16, the tipster has now revealed the date when the smartphone is expected to go up for pre-order.

According to Blass, Apple will begin pre-orders of the new iPhone on September 9. Typically, the company begins pre-orders three days after the launch event. Therefore, if this new information from Blass is true, then the earlier speculated September 5 or 6 launch event date is rather likely. Apple's media invites should begin to roll out mid-August revealing the official launch event date.

The new iPhone - which could be called the iPhone 7 or the iPhone 6SE, depending upon who you believe - has been making headlines for quite some time now, and very little is left to the imagination ahead of the launch.

The new iPhone should see a better camera, a shift in antenna bands, a faster A10 chipset, and a separate additional larger variant is expected to get visible hardware changes as well. Earlier leaks suggest that the Plus variant will just be larger, similar to the iPhone 6 Plus and iPhone 6s Plus. There were also suggestions that a 'Pro' variant with a dual camera setup and a Smart Connector at the back will also been launched. A new Space Black color variant has also been tipped in various leaks.

The upcoming iPhone has been leaked in photos and videos revealing the smartphone from all angles. There's also a tip that Apple may make minimal design changes to the iPhone this year, breaking the traditional tick-tock cycle.

Apple iPhone 7 may be launched as the iPhone 6SE: Here’s why it makes sense

In the past few months, I've been covering a string of rumors around Apple's upcoming devices allegedly the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus with minimal changes, and then we've also been hearing about the big overhaul coming next year with the iPhone 8. Now, the rumor mill has thrown in one more device to confuse us further — iPhone 6SE.

The new rumors points out that the company will be launching iPhone 6SE in September. Interestingly, the report claims the company will call the new device iPhone 6SE instead of iPhone 7. Apple is known to be pretty tight lipped about news related to its upcoming products, but German website Apfelpage.de, citing supply chain sources, said packages are already being produced with the iPhone 6SE branding.

Apple's product cycle

This makes sense, considering the product cycle Apple is known to follow. Last year was the 'S' year which usually brings some internal 'speed' changes. So, this year, ideally, the alleged iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus should come with a major design overhaul. But rumors all along have been indicating that the devices this year will come with minimal changes, such as waterproofing capability and the removal of the audio jack. So, joining the dots, an iPhone 6SE and probably 6SE Plus would make more sense. And, this means the big overhaul will come with the iPhone 8 next year, and the company will be able to follow the nomenclature it has been using, so far. Also, this year the devices are expected to simply be an upgrade to the 6s series, and naming the smallest variant the '6SE' makes sense.

iPhone turns 10 next year

The big changes coming in next year also make sense since it will be a grand year for a device that turns 10. Now, that explains a lot about the big changes planned for next year. Jony Ive has apparently planned a major overhaul for next year, celebrating 10 years of iPhone.

It is also about 'big' technology in the pipeline

Besides celebrating the iPhone's 10th anniversary, the technology that Apple plans to implement is also believed to be very complex. This report claims that Jony Ive has been hoping for an iPhone that looks like a single sheet of glass and the ideas for 2017’s iPhones seem to be something on those lines.

Apple is smarter than you think

Why would Apple not put its best foot forward when the sales are sliding off a slippery slope and wait until next year? Well, because it could be a well-thought move. Apple may be looking to create a year long lull and analysts are saying that a "powder keg is forming in the installed base," a theory by Timothy Arcuri and his team of analysts at Cowen & Co.. 

Apple iPhone users who are expected to upgrade to iPhone 7 or probably the 6SE are about 33 percent (a consistent figure for the past six quarters), and by the next five quarters this number will go up by 43 percent. The 43 percent upgrades will bring in more sales next year than the 33 percent this year. He calls it a super-cycle for the year 2017. The iPhone to be launched this year could be described as a bridge to get to the super cycle.

He explains, "The iPhone 7 (or the alleged iPhone 6SE) won’t be a big design innovation because it realises the ageing dynamics of the base and saw this coming years ago. Choosing to save the true cycle of innovation for when the base would be incredibly ripe is a smart move. Ergo, we conclude that either, 1. the iPhone 7 sells better than expected due to this ageing base, or 2., the iPhone in 2017 will be a super-cycle, especially if we are right about a new innovative OLED-enabled form factor."

iPhone 7 may Launch in the Week of September 12: Report

Apple traditionally holds its iPhone launch event in September every year, but there is no official announcement on the iPhone 7 event date yet. However, a fresh leak now points at a tentative launch time frame. The iPhone 7 may be launched in the third week of September, specifically in the week of September 12.

Just to clarify, this refers to the retail release, not the launch event. To be even more specific, it should happen on Friday, Sept. 16th.

This time-frame comes from tipster Evan Blass, who is noted for his accuracy when it comes to leaks. Last year, Apple launched the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus on September 9, however it came to India a month later. The same pattern is also expected this year.

The iPhone 7 was expected to launch in three variants - iPhone 7, iPhone 7 Plus, and a new iPhone 7 Pro version. However, new leaks hint that Apple may just stick to two variants this year. There is also expected to be a new base storage variant - 32GB. The probable storage offerings are going to be shuffled to 32GB, 128GB, and a possible new 256GB variant.

Apple may also introduce a new dual camera setup in its large iPhone 7 Plus variant. There is also going to be the addition of the Smart Connector at the back, again exclusive to the large variant only. To accommodate all this new hardware, the iPhone 7 Plus may get a bump to 3GB RAM.

The variants are expected to sport slightly bigger batteries, and the new Apple A10 processor for faster performance. The Home Button is expected to perform multiple functions, and be Force Touch enabled. Because of the new chip (and if the rumoured death of 3.5mm audio jack is true), the iPhone 7 is also expected to be at least 1mm slimmer than its predecessor.

There's also a lot of chatter about the 3.5mm audio jack. Conflicting reports on the removal of the audio output make it difficult to really nail a presumptive conclusion on whether it will be included this year or not. There's also expected to be a new Space Black colour variant with this year's launch.
