Galaxy Note 7's production permanently stopped

Samsung has announced that it is ending the production of the Galaxy Note 7 and permanently discontinuing it worldwide after reports of devices it had deemed safe catching fire.

The decision comes immediately after the company issued a press release asking users to power down all original and replaced Note 7 units, and for retailers and career partners to stop sales and exchanges of the smartphone.

"We remain committed to working diligently with appropriate regulatory authorities to take all necessary steps to resolve the situation." said Samsung on its blog.

The decision to end the Note 7's production is the final step in a rather complicated journey. After being announced back in August and being met with generally positive reviews, the Note 7 first came under fire or should I say got fired after reports of units exploding surfaced on the internet. After 35 cases had been reported, Samsung issued an official recall of the device, which sent everyone into a tizzy with airlines and airport authorities calling for an official ban on usage of the device in several countries.

Samsung did the best on its part, replacing not just the affected but every Note 7 it sold and issuing a new device with an updated battery pack and a green battery indicator so the customers and authorities alike could tell them apart. It even restricted the older devices from charging beyond 60% so people who hadn't replaced theirs yet wouldn't overcharge them.

But after the replacement units also started catching fire, most notably one on a Southwest Airlines flight 994 from Louisville to Baltimore, which had to be evacuated when a passenger's replacement Note 7 caught fire, Samsung eventually asked everyone to power them down.

And finally did what was inevitable and, some might argue, what should have been done from the beginning, pulled the plug entirely on the Note 7.

Samsung Galaxy Note 7 Use Banned on All Flights in India

India has become the latest country after USA and Japan to ban the use of Samsung's Galaxy Note 7 on all flights, after a spate of cases around the world where the phone's battery has exploded.

"Airlines are advised to ensure the following for the safety of aircraft operations and its occupants: Not to turn on or charge Samsung Galaxy Note 7 mobile phone on board the aircraft. Not to stow them in any checked-in baggage," the Government's Office of Director General of Civil Aviation, said in a public notice on Friday.

This means that the phone can only be carried in the cabin in switched-off state and cannot be powered on, or charged, for the duration of the flight.

Regulators in other countries including US and Japan have already taken similar measures.

Responding to the development, Samsung India issued the following statement: "We are aware of the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) notice. Consumer safety and peace of mind are our top priority. Galaxy Note 7 sales have not started in India, and we have delayed sales to alleviate any safety concerns. We plan to expedite new shipments of Galaxy Note 7 soon to reduce any inconvenience for our customers."

It's worth pointing out that Samsung has acknowledged battery problems in the Note 7 and suspended sales of the smartphone worldwide. Customers who have already received their Note 7 smartphones in some other countries have been advised to turn them back in for a replacement unit available in due course, or move to another Samsung phone of their choice.

While Samsung never shipped the Galaxy Note 7 in India and postponed its release before it officially started shipping, it's likely there are units out there purchased in other countries or via the grey market. Customers who had pre-booked the Note 7 in India have been offered freebies as appeasement.

The Samsung Galaxy Note 7 has reportedly been involved in a series of fire-related incidents across the world, thanks to its exploding battery problem that has been acknowledged by the company. The latest reported incidents involved a jeep and a house allegedly set on fire after Note 7 units exploded.

Samsung Galaxy Note 7 sales halted; company issues statement and worldwide recall of handsets

Reports of Samsung Galaxy Note 7 phablets exploding had recently hit the news. The actual source of the trouble is unknown Samsung took their time responding. Finally, after at least 35 reports of exploding phones poured in, Samsung has today issued an official statement announcing that it will replace every single Note 7 handset out there with a new one.

Korean news agency Yonhap News, has reported that Samsung held a conference in South Korea with regards to the same. The agency states that Samsung investigated the issue and has concluded that it was due to faulty battery cells.

Koh Dong-jin, head of Samsung's handset business division, confirmed to reporters at the conference that only 24 out of 1 million units have been found to have faulty batteries.

"As of Sept. 1, a total of 35 claims were registered with Samsung's service centers at home and abroad. Only 24 units on a scale of 1 million were affected by the battery problem," he said.

"By putting our top priority on customer safety, we've decided to halt sales (of Galaxy Note 7) and offer new replacement handsets to all customers,"

Samsung has issued an official statement on the same issue as well that clarifies any doubts for customers who have already received their handsets.

"Samsung is committed to producing the highest quality products and we take every incident report from our valued customers very seriously. In response to recently reported cases of the new Galaxy Note7, we conducted a thorough investigation and found a battery cell issue.
To date (as of September 1) there have been 35 cases that have been reported globally and we are currently conducting a thorough inspection with our suppliers to identify possible affected batteries in the market. However, because our customers’ safety is an absolute priority at Samsung, we have stopped sales of the Galaxy Note 7.
For customers who already have Galaxy Note 7 devices, we will voluntarily replace their current device with a new one over the coming weeks.
We acknowledge the inconvenience this may cause in the market but this is to ensure that Samsung continues to deliver the highest quality products to our customers. We are working closely with our partners to ensure the replacement experience is as convenient and efficient as possible."

Out here in India, Samsung today had just begun rolling out its Galaxy Note 7 handsets to physical stores and online channels as the handset had hit pre-order on 22 August with a positive response.

Those who pre-ordered the devices are, however, receiving the following message from Samsung, "Thank you for pre-booking Galaxy Note7. We regret to inform that delivery of your Galaxy Note 7 is being delayed. We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience. You can be assured that we are working hard to deliver your Galaxy Note7 to you as soon as possible. Thank you for your understanding."
